Martin Black:

Martin’s favorite place is deep in the rugged, sage filled, ranching country of the Owyhee Mountains. His innate ability to feel a horse’s footfall, rhythm and offer smooth transitions that become both effortless to horse and rider; building a strong foundation from the first saddling to high-level performance horses. Whether dancing through lava rock or flying down the fence at the World’s Greatest Horseman, he will give you the opportunity to become the best you can be.

Donnette Hicks:

Donnette’s passion is in the art of the equine human relationship. She enjoys capturing the journey through many expressions — photography, poetry, film, coaching champions and most of all being a full time student of the horse.
The Impact Of The Horse was born out of her desire to merge a private enterprise, Sage Creek Equestrian, with the BLM Wild Horse and Burro program bringing a new possibility of human partnership for America’s wild mustang herds. Donnette started working with starting colts and working with problem horses under the tutelage of Ben Quinters. Ben introduced Donnette to the world renowned horseman Ray Hunt and thus the desire to understand a willing partnership was born and has been her driving goal now for over 30 years.
Donnette is a well educated horseman specializing in Dressage. Her purchase of a Grand Prix German school master catapulted Donnette into developing a deep understanding of quality upper level movements. Donnette’s greatest devotion is her love of witnessing humans succeed in having a beautiful partnership with their horse.

Jim Hicks:

Reoccurring Guest Clinician

Jim Hicks, one of the owners of Sage Creek Equestrian, is an accomplished professional horseman. He uniquely blends the principles of horsemanship with the movements of dressage to bring out the best in himself and his equine partners.

Over 30 years ago, Hicks and his Wife sought out Ray Hunt, with a desire to learn more about the horse, and Hunt remains one of the greatest influences on the Hicks’ careers.

Hicks has become a noted clinician worldwide, specializing in bringing dressage principles to horsemen of any discipline. In Jim’s clinics, it is common to have large-bodied warmbloods side-by-side with quarter horses fresh off the ranch.

“What appears beautiful and effortless, is in fact an achievement in art, feel and athleticism, requiring years of quality development for both horse and rider.” – Jim Hicks

Hicks refuses to attribute the value of a horse to its price tag and believes that the horse is the mirror to the human soul. He is a committed student of the horse and takes pride in helping others relate to their horses in a way that leaves both horse and rider successful in their partnership.

“The rider must adjust his feel and timing to the sensitivity of the horse.” – Jim Hicks
